eSports is making its debut at this year’s Asian Games 2022 with medals being awarded in eight games, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has confirmed. The 2022 Asian Games, aka XIX Asiad, is a multi-sport event and will be the third Chinese city to host the Asian Games, after Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.
The Asian Games 2022 medal eSports games are FIFA (made by EA SPORTS), an Asian Games version of PUBG Mobile and Arena of Valor, Dota 2, League of Legends, Dream Three Kingdoms 2, HearthStone and Street Fighter V. Which equals 8 medal games at the Asian Games.
Each game will have gold, silver and bronze medals on offer, which means 24 medals can be won by competing eSports teams at the upcoming games in Hangzhou, China in October this September.
Two more games - VR Sports and Robot Masters - will be played as demo events at the 2022 Asian Games and could feature in official eSports games at future Asian Game meetings.
I believe we have ticked all the right boxes ensuring a high level of competition which promises great viewing for enthusiasts and casuals alike. said OCA Director General, Husain Al-Musallam.
.We at the OCA are looking forward to working closely with our friends at the Asian Electronic Sports Federation and the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee to ensure a successful execution of the esports event at the 2022 Asian Games. Al-Musallam added.
eSports is big business in Asia
The Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF) is the technical delegate for eSports. This means that the AESF is responsible for the qualifying competition and management at the Asian Games 2022 for everything eSports related.
eSports was tested as an event at the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta and Palembang. Because eSports was only a demonstration event it meant that medals won by competitors in eSports events did not count towards the final medal table.
India’s eSports legend Tirth Mehta won bronze medal in the HearthStone demo event a the 2018 Asian Games.
Whether or not the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will follow in the footsteps of the Olympic Council of Asia remains to be seen. Recently IOC chiefs declared that eSports could be a medal event at the future Olympic games. Although, the IOC has specified that titles involving violence or shooting were not a good fit for Olympic values which rules out a large number of eSports titles included in the Asian Games 2022 medal events.
